31 Days of Halloween, Day 12: “Sanguinarium” – Season 4

Synopsis | Mulder and Scully investigate when patients undergoing cosmetic surgery die horrible deaths at the hands of doctors possessed by witchcraft.
Trivia | The episode title “Sanguinarium” means “place of blood” in Latin. The episode is noteworthy for starting as a spec script written by two fans of the show; then Chris Carter and other members of the writing staff including Howard Gordon and Vince Gilligan reworked the ideas into a teleplay. It features references to real-life witchcraft sources.
Quotes | Scully: “There’s magic going on here, Mulder. Only it’s being done with silicone, collagen, and a well-placed scalpel.”

31 Days of Halloween, Day 11: “Unruhe” – Season 4

Synopsis | Mulder’s only hope of stopping a psychotic killer are psychic photographs that reveal the madman’s darkest fantasies.
Trivia | The episode title “Unruhe” means “unrest” in German. “Unruhe” is the first episode of the series to air not on Friday but on Sunday; it was chosen for being a representative episode of the show. The original series would always air on Sunday from this episode onward.
Quotes | Scully: “My captivity forced me to understand and even empathize with Gerry Schnauz. My survival depended on it. I see now the value of such insight. For truly to pursue monsters, we must understand them. We must venture into their minds. Only in doing so, do we risk letting them venture into ours?”

31 Days of Halloween, Day 10: “Home” – Season 4

Synopsis | Mulder and Scully investigate the death of an infant with disturbing birth defects, and the trail of clues leads to a murderous clan of inbred mutants.
Trivia | “Home” is the first episode of the series to receive a viewer discretion warning. After its initial airing, FOX took it out of rotation (the only time in The X-Files history that this happened) for three years. The network offered to lift the ban and allow the episode to be repeated if the bludgeoning scene was removed; however, screenwriters Glen Morgan and James Wong refused. The episode eventually returned to FOX on Halloween 1999.
Quotes | Mulder: “Is there some secret farmer trick to get these things moving?” Scully: “I don’t know. Naa-ram-ewe! Naa-ram-ewe!” Mulder: “Yeah, that’ll work.”
