Showrunner Chris Carter has spoken about the future of the show in interviews with Den of Geek and news.com.au, stating that “right now we’re playing a wait-and-see”.

When questioned about Season 12, Carter said:

Right now, of course, it’s up in the air, in terms of Gillian’s interest in doing the show. I think she’s stated that she’s finished her run. That certainly changes things, and also the sale of Fox to either Disney or Comcast – it looks like Disney now – I think that will change things, and certainly they’ll be looking at the show and wondering what its future would be. So right now we’re playing a wait-and-see with all those variables.

Or a third film:

You know, once again, it’s about Gillian’s involvement. For me, The X-Files is Mulder and Scully, so even though we did the show without David, without Mulder, for a time, I always felt like her science was the centre of the show. In the end, it is a science show, and it makes it all-important.

Carter revealed his favorite episodes from the last couple of seasons. He named four: “Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster”, “The Lost Art of Forehead Sweat”, “Rm9sbG93ZXJz” and “My Struggle IV”.

Carter pointed out the status of the production company as an important factor:

For me, to be honest, The X-Files is Mulder and Scully so the idea of doing it without [Gillian Anderson] is one I haven’t confronted yet and I don’t really have to because there is some time now, because 20th Century Fox [which makes the show] is going to be 20th Century Disney pretty soon [if the two companies merge] and that will change everything.
